I am thinking of relocating in the next year or two to Georgia to be closer to my mother, who lives near Atlanta. I am currently a very active member of the Democratic party and would like to remain so, and would like to know if there are certain areas around Atlanta that have a higher democratic population than others. Anyone have an idea?

Liberal Democrats are not welcome in the South.

Tommy probably moved from the midwest or a northern place and thinks it is all right to be crude. Still, Georgia is very politically conservative. If you are A-A, go to directly to Atlanta or any suburban area where the great majority of black citizens are Democrats and the party is alive and well. If you are white (or anything else), Atlanta -- city of, not burbs -- may be your best choice if you don't mind constant traffic hassels, a higher cost of living, and some few people to share your political interests. If you can keep your political conversation in check, smaller, nicer places are Macon, Augusta, Gainesville.

Athens would also be a good option. It is home of a large university, so the people are going to be more educated and open-minded.

Living in 'intown' or ITP (in the perimeter) Atlanta would be your best choice, but mind you, what area does your mother live? If you live in the wrong direction, you could be in some serious traffic. Just like any city, most Democratic-minded persons live in urban areas. I'm not sure of the reason, but my assumption would be the greater diversity of not just the people but activities. I think you would like Inman Park, Midtown, and/or Virginia Highland area.

I have never heard of anyone wanting to choose a place to live based on party affiliation, BUT, my suggestion to you would be to live in the metro. Atlanta area simply because there is more diversity of mind here. I think Democrats are usually more liberal-minded and many other parts of GA (rural & small town) are traditionally conservative. I've lived in the metro ATL area for 10 years now and love it!

I wouldn't do that... but if you must.. ATL and athens.... they are different democrats than blue state dems... don't do macon or gainesville as someone sudgested they are absoulte holes. If you just want to go south then I'd recomend NC... they are the most progressive state in the south.
