I have always heard of people doing this, but mine seem to drop off all foliage by new years and look like a stalk, and appear unworthy to put in the basement. Any Suggestions

Not sure if you can do that.Never knew them to stay alive.Once they die out just throw them in a dark area of the basement covered with a plastic bag and ignore it.NO water or plant food.Early November bring it out of the basement and start to water it and give it plant food.By December you will have a pretty plant again.

the traditional method is to cover them with a brown paper bag and store in a cool, dark place, but my wife leaves hers out on our closed-in porch(like a florida room south-facing) she waters them regularly, and they sometimes thrive year round.she actually had one that lasted about 5 years once and was red right through the summer.

The reason the plants seem to die is they get too much sunlight. They thrive more in the winter because the nights are longer and days are shorter. I've always heard to keep them in the closet and mimic the season of winter only exposing them to light every so often.
