Is it true that in the state of Georgia they put their animals who are in shelters in gas chambers? I heard if the animals don't get adopted out soon they are put in a gas chamber and killed. If this is going on I think it is absolutely sick!! Not that it is the people fault but maybe people should try to work together in the state to get this stopped.

This happens in more places than GA. I've lived and worked at shelters in GA, KS, MO, and IL and it has happened at all three. Even at places supposedly no-kill. Last place I worked at was in KC, MO and supposedly no kill. 3 month old Beagle pup contacted Parvo, was quarantined until recovered, (which was supposedly rare, Parvo is usually fatal) and I was told the next day we would be putting him down. I was showed the gas chamber where he would be put too sleep and the incinerator next to it. I asked why we would nurse him back to health just to kill him and was told it was illegal to kill him while sick, but legal to do afterwards because he was now healthy. I quit animal care that day.

yeah unfortunatly it is...and it is not humane....i think that is why there are so many people now who just rescue and foster animals until homes are found, and that requires alot of home checks, they are spayed/nutered, shots, heartworm stuff, de wormed, and alot of paperwork, we adopted one and it was 200.00 to adopt him, but he is healthy, and beautiful...thank god for the animal rescuers...mannnnny more are always needed....

Abandoned animals are put down in shelter all over the USA. The methods they use isn't really the issue. There is an overpopulation of animals and if they can't be adopted or given a home in a rescue shelter they are put to sleep. This is common everywhere not just in Atlanta.

What's the difference if it's gas or the blue juice? Either way it's sad, but it's better than having the abandoned and unwanted animals abused by bad owners, left to fend for themselves on the streets, or spending a miserable life in a poorly maintained kennel, and kennels and food cost money. When I worked as a vet tech, all of the vets in Georgia that I knew of used the "blue juice" (Euthatal, Sodium Pentobarbital) to euthanize old or seriously ill animals, and it's a 2-step process (a sedative first and then the blue juice) and it's extremely humane. As for the vets and shelters that get paid by the local counties as the animal control drop-offs, I can't speak to those, but I have heard a lot of really bad things about those places anyway and a gas chamber death is the least of those animal's problems. (And unforunately they almost always have long good-ole-boy connections to the county politicians, so good luck challenging their methods.) What you can really do to help is to donate old towels, old blankets, even old clothing that could be used as blankets and rags, dog food, cat food, laundry detergent, pet toys, etc., to your local humane society. They absolutely LOVE such donations -- especially towels and food -- and they will take ANYTHING. (Even money.) If you support them on an ongoing basis, there won't be any need to euthanize unwanted animals. That's what I do. And it's really all you can do that will make a positive difference.
